Group Counseling Program for Inner City Minority Youth It is often believed that only adults experience stress and anxiety, however stress is something that does not have an age requirement. Adolescent stress and anxiety are important health issues that often go unnoticed. Early adolescence is defined, as a period between 11 and 14 years of age (Carlozzi, Winterowd, Harrist Thomason, Bratkovich, Worth, 2010, p. 446). These years are usually marked by rapid changes. For most students, stress can stem from puberty, new demands of school, changing peer relationships, and responsibilities to families. Not to mention, early adolescence is period of development where identities, social skills, and personal values are being established.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦One way this is accomplished is by ââ¬Å"closing the achievement gap between high- and low performing children, especially the achievement gaps between minority and nonminority students, and between disadvantaged children and their more advantaged peersâ⬠(No Child Left Behin d Act, 2001, Section 101). Because there is a great emphasis placed on closing the achievement gaps of those who are disadvantage, it is important to pay attention to all factors that affects the studentââ¬â¢s academic performance. If students are experiencing chronic stress and anxiety due to community violence and/or poverty-stricken living conditions, they will experience difficulties with performing academically. Under the NCLB act, the school counselor focus on all aspects of the student, specifically their developmental needs. Teachers are responsible prepping and improving studentsââ¬â¢ academic achievement. As practicing professional school counselor, it is important to utilize the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. According to the ASCA national model, effective school counselors focus their time, skills, and energy on direct and indirect services to students.
